MC Shan's album debut wasn't a success, despite the presence of one justifiable rap classic and several other interesting ideas for songs. Most of the problem lay in Marley Marl's productions, which took the sound of MC Shan no farther than his massive hit, 'The Bridge,' and seemed to merely duplicate the process with every track. Shan opened with a pair of intriguing project stories, one about a solid student turned junkie ('Jane, Stop This Crazy Thing') and the other about an easy girl ('Project 'Ho'). Admittedly, these tracks weren't quite as exciting as they were compelling, but Marley Marl's constant focus on stuttered-sampling madness soon lapsed into mildness and then simple frustration. Shan got a bit more hardcore on 'Kill That Noise,' responding again to KRS-One and Boogie Down Productions, and finally returned to the astounding energy level of 'The Bridge' with a pair of later tracks, 'Down by Law' and 'Living in the World of Hip Hop.' MC Shan released his debut album “ Down By Law” on August 8, 1987. The album was produced by Marley Marl and was released on Cold Chillin’ Records.

The first time I had heard MC Shan was on “ Marley Marl Scratch” where he was chopping it up while Marley was pumping that boom-bap beat! I then heard “ He Cuts So Fresh” and I was hooked! The beat was dope and the way that Marley cut up “ Isaac’s Mood“, I was looking forward for MC Shan’s album with all those Marley cuts!

In between those two tracks I mentioned, “ Beat Biter” was released but it was the B-side that everyone was raving about! The A-side was a diss track towards LL, but “ The Bridge” on the other side was the track that everyone was talking about for ages. The infectious beat that Marley created plus the use and reworking of the track “ Impeach The President” made it sonically one of the greatest tracks in Hip Hop History. At the same time, Shan’s lyrics about his hometown gives us a glimpse of his work and where Hip Hop grew yet he never mentions that it was born there.
